Madison District Public Schools fund for kids honors wrestler’s legacy

Madison Heights, MI – Madison District Public Schools has a dream, that every child who graduates will have the opportunity to attend the college or career training school of their choice.

To help all families, particularly those who struggle economically, the district has established The Jim Myers K2C Fund, named for beloved former teacher, coach, and Hall of Fame wrestler Jim Myers. Known professionally as George “The Animal” Steele, Myers overcame the challenge of dyslexia to graduate from Madison High School and later earn a Master’s Degree.

The Jim Myers K2C Fund will place $100 in a savings account for every child in the district, money that can help offset the soaring costs of higher education. In a YouTube video released in April, Superintendent Randy Speck said the idea arose when Myers passed away in February.

“We wanted to do something that would honor his legacy and commitment to Madison Heights,” Speck said.

The fund’s initial goal is to raise $60,000, and the district expects to add money to it each year, “so more opportunities can happen for more children,” he explained. Families can contribute additional dollars as well.

Speck said research shows that a “financial boost” to a child’s education increases the expectation of college and career training, increases school attendance and completion rates, and decreases student debt.

“Your gift can make all the difference in the world for these kids and this community,” Speck said. “Studies show that the number one link to social mobility is the access to higher education and career training. Your gift can provide that access.”
