Highland Twp, MI – An early morning fire Monday is not stopping the folks at Colasanti’s Market in Highland from selling their food and flowers to the many customers who have been coming through the day.
The fire broke out just before 1am, and the cause is still under investigation. The greenhouse area of the building has been destroyed, with charred remnants untouched and exposed behind yellow caution tape while the investigation continues.
There was damage to the gift shop area as well, but the market itself is open for business. Oakland County Undersheriff Mike McCabe reported that “The Highland Township Fire Department received assistance from the Milford Twp. Fire Department, the Commerce Fire Township Department, the White Lake Township Fire Department and the North Oakland County Fire Authority. Once firefighters had extinguished the fire, the Highland Township Fire Chief requested the assistance of the OCSO Fire Investigation Unit to assist them with a cause and origin investigation.”
In addition to a variety of landscaping items, groceries and butcher shop items, the store is known for the unique setting it offers visitors. A path takes guests around a small pond with a miniature State of Liberty in the middle. There are several areas to rest and eat. And there is a cage with a variety of birds inside, including turkeys, roosters and a pair of white peacocks. The manager said that no humans or animals were harmed in the fire.
According to their website, Colassanti’s and Snook’s Butcher Shop have been around since 1979 and they joined forces in 1989. With a motto of “Fresh Food. Friendly People,” they have long been a destination location for folks in Highland Township and beyond.
