Wednesday Nights are for Classic Cars in Downtown Holly

Holly, MI –  The sounds of old time rock and roll mix with the voom, voom, voom of classic car engines and the chatter of folks talking about each others’ rides fill Downtown Holly every Wednesday through the summertime. The Car Show has long been a tradition in the quaint historic village, though it’s been most active in the past ten years since Bob Alsop and his team of volunteers took it over.

“There’s a lot of work that goes into this, “ Alsop said.  “We’ve got a great group of volunteers who help out every week.   We gotta thank the volunteers,  the sponsors, and Vince and Cari (Cucksey) of RePurpose for letting us use their space.  We couldn’t do this without everybody’s help.”

The sponsors include Bars Leak, Premium Truck and Auto Body, Red Devil, Avia Family Dining, Holly Gas, Holly Hills Primitives, Davisburg Bread Company, Zanie Janies, auto Zone, Holly Marathon, Southern Motors, Shops at 101, Holly Automotive and the Moose Lodge.  There is also a 50/50 raffle.  Money raised goes to the Clarkston Area Lion’s Club, except for popcorn profits which go to Holly Area Schools.

Bob Haas brings his uniquely customized ’55 Crown Fairlane to the show.  The car is decorated with a Coca-Cola theme and the backseat has been replaced with a retro dining table and poodle-skirted mannequin ready to share a Coke.  “I’ve got an open door policy,” Haas said.  “Most people have signs on their cars that say ‘do not touch.’  Not me.  I want people to get in and see up close.  Makes for some good pictures, some good memories.”

He and his wife Lorraine took the car to World of Coke in Atlanta Georgia and it’s now featured on the Coca-Cola website. It regularly appears at the Holly Car Show as well as the Woodward Dream Cruise in August.

Dave Williams of Fenton decided to stay as close to original as possible when he restored his black and red ’62 Chevy Impala. He did all the work himself, an endeavor that took about five years. The only exception was the interior which was a reproduction kit he had someone else install.

“This is a nice show,” he said.  “I’ve made a lot of friends.  It’s nice to come here an know everybody.  It’s a good Wednesday night.”
