Resources for Adults Seeking Counseling

Oakland County, MI – Last month I started a quest to find some counseling help for a young adult in my life. They did not currently have health insurance and were having trouble finding someone that would see them. I started with Easter Seals as I have often found them to be very helpful in my job (I work at Big Brothers Big Sisters) when I have needed services for people under 18. Once you are over 18, however, they require insurance.
Unless you are in college, the only place I found that did not ask for insurance is Oakland Integrated Healthcare Network. If you are in school you can utilize the counseling center without insurance. You can also go to the Wayne State Psychology Clinic and they will work out payments with their sliding scale which I hear is very reasonable. Sand Castles is free, however, it is very specific to grief counseling for families. It does not handle every day depression.
Common Ground was very helpful. They have a 24 hr crisis hotline as well as a building on Telegraph that is open 24-7 and has counselors to handle a crisis. They gave us a number to start the insurance path and recommended Community mental health services from there.
I also included some apps here. I had people recommend the first 3 as helpful.
The young person I wanted to help is waiting for an apt with Oakland Integrated Healthcare Network and until then is seeing their school counselor.
I did some of the phone calling for them. It was very worrying to me that for many places (not included on this list) when I said they were over 18 and without insurance there was nothing they could do and could not offer alternatives. That shows me that even when there are alternatives they may not be long lived because of funding issues. This is a sad state.

OCC, Wayne State, UDM, etc… they all have counseling services. These are included with your tuition. Do not hesitate to use them. They will not be able to prescribe medication.
