15 Things: The Artsy Parking Meters of Royal Oak

(Crystal A. Proxmire, May 6, 2017)

Royal Oak, MI – Paying for parking is generally not that exciting of a task, but sixty artists have helped make it a little more fun in Downtown Royal Oak. The “Meters Made Beautiful” project happened last year for the Arts, Beats and Eats festival over Labor Day weekend, yet their artistic value lasts all year round.

The meters line Washington, in front of businesses such as Pronto, Five 15, Urbane Apartments, and Write Impressions.

Designs vary from frothy beer mugs and a pair of pink flamingos, to abstract art, and characters like a skeleton and a mermaid eating pizza.  The project was sponsored by Ford and Royal Oak Commission for the Arts.

Here are 15 of our favorites.
