Ferndale, MI – “The Artist in You” competition presented by the Ferndale Area Chamber of Commerce celebrates area youth in the Ferndale community from Ferndale high school, Ferndale University High, and CASA.
On Tuesday April 25th at the Ferndale public library, students, families, teachers, and community members gather for the reception and awards ceremony.
Awards include several cash prizes, but the first place winner will have the chance to see their 2D art work enlarged and displayed in the Ferndale community as public art.
CASA and Lamphere High student, Erin Burcham, 17, and her piece “Blue Period” will receive the grand prize announced at the reception.
“My piece ‘Blue Period’ is a self-portrait done in the Venetian style where several layers of oil paint are used to complete the painting,” Burcham says.
“It was my first oil painting class. My teacher told me to use high contrast lighting so I put a timer on my camera and took a photo of myself as a reference.”
Burcham will be attending University at Maine College of the Arts in Portland, Maine.
In second place is Heaven Guly, “Feelings” and third place goes to Elliot Blevenstein, “Green Screen.”
Jennifer Gebbie, CASA director says “The arts are so important and enable creative and critical thinking. Shows like this help kids understand the community supports them.
“Congratulations to all students involved.”
The show will be on display at the Ferndale Public Library from April 10th until May 21st.
