Developments in the Works in Royal Oak
(City of Royal Oak, March 19, 2017)
Royal Oak, MI – What’s being built around Royal Oak? Here are some of the developments taken from the City’s website:
Royal Oak City Center
A proposed public-private partnership between the City of Royal Oak and the Central Park Development Group, the Royal Oak City Center consists of five projects within the current city hall site:
A 160,000 sf office building
A 30,000 sf standalone Royal Oak city hall
A new six-story parking garage
A new police station
Currently planned to begin construction Spring 2017, this four-story office building is situated in the parking lot at the corner of 11 Mile and Center Street.
Northwood Shopping Center Redevelopment
The former Northwood Shopping Center at the southwest corner of Woodward Avenue and 13 Mile Road is being demolished to make way for the new development on the 15-acre property. A campus comprised of five main buildings will offer a grocery store, a 70,000-square-foot five-story hotel, restaurants and 110,000 square feet of retail space. The 183,000-square-foot complex will feature green space, landscape gardens and an assemblage area to host festivals and fairs.
Center Street Hotel Project
The mixed-used proposal from Koucar Management would include a Radisson Red hotel to be built where the four-level Center Street city parking deck stands between Second and Fourth streets. Above the ground floor hotel lobby, which would include banquet and retail spaces, would be four levels of parking with a total of 456 parking spaces.
Located at at 400 N. Main, formerly the home of a used-car dealership, a five story, 122-room Hyatt Place hotel is being planned for this busy stretch of downtown Royal Oak. To the north of the hotel would be a six-story, mixed-use building with retail, office space and about 60 apartments on the fourth through sixth floors. A three-level, off-street parking deck would service the property. Demolition of the former dealership is currently underway.
Developed by Burton-Katzman, this proposed mixed use project will bring a new 150 room hotel, over 360 parking spaces, 35,000 sf of retail and over 80,000 sf of new office space to Downtown Royal Oak.
Former Citizens Bank Project
Demolition crews have finished taking down the long-vacant Citizens Bank building at 218 S. Main to make way for a two-story building that will include a restaurant, retail and office space.
I-696 and Main Street Project
A proposed $40 million residential development, comprised of a four-story apartment building and 10,000 sf of retail space, is in the process of finalizing a development agreement with the site’s owner, the Downtown Development Authority.
Eagle Plaza
In 2015, Royal Oak successfully completed its crowdfunding initiative to transform the worn-out Center Street pedestrian plaza into a state-of-the-art ‘smart park’ that will incorporate many elements, including Wi-Fi, charging stations, solar panels, touch-screen kiosks, and sustainable landscaping. The project, which utilized the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Public Spaces Community Places program, is currently under construction with a Spring 2017 projected grand opening .
