Former Troy Mayor Janice Daniels Speaks Against Mosque in Sterling Heights (video)

Sterling Heights, MI – Former Troy Mayor Janice Daniels, who was recalled in 2012, made an appearance in Sterling Heights Tuesday for a City Council meeting to share her views about the Islamic faith.

“If I heard you correctly Council, you were talking about spending $1 million on playground equipment and yet there’s a legal argument that you don’t have any funds to fight against a political ideology whose goal is ‘Death to America.’  You’ve got your priorities wrong,” Daniels said.

Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor interrupted her remarks, stating “Mrs. Daniels you’re out of order, sit back down.”

Daniels made national news in 2011 when she posted on Facebook “I think I am going to throw away my I Love New York carrying bag now that queers can get married there.”  She then reportedly told students in the Gay Straight Alliance at Troy High School that homosexuality is a psychological illness. She was recalled in 2012.

Tuesday’s meeting in Sterling Heights had overflow attendance, with over 100 people present to oppose the building of the Mosque.  At several points the Mayor stopped the meeting to quell outbursts from the crowd.  Comments opposing the mosque lasted nearly an hour.

The City’s Planning Commission had denied the special land use application in Sept. 2015, and in Oct. 2015 the US Department of Justice filed a lawsuit citing the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, and the AICC filed a civil suit.

Attorney Anne McClorey McLaughlin gave details of the cases and the proposed settlement.  The settlement reduced the size of the Mosque’s dome and spires, included provisions for parking, and called for no outdoor calls to prayer or outdoor amplified music or sound.

City Council unanimously approved settling the two lawsuits over the construction of a Mosque at the American Islamic Community Center near 15 Mile and Mound Road.

On Facebook Daniels defended her remark, stating “I was speaking out against civilization jihad. If you would simply study the history of Islam you would know that they have a 1,400 year history of conquest. They are shouting Death to America and progressives just want to lay down and let’s just all pretend that there is no mandate to kill anyone who is a Christian or a Jewish person. Our children deserve our courage to face a lethal enemy but no, let’s gang up on the people who are brave enough to stand up for the truth. Good luck Sterling Heights.”

US District Attorney Barbara McQuade told the Detroit News Wednesday morning “I grew up in Sterling Heights and I am very proud to announce this settlement.  Inclusion cannot mean that some groups are welcome and others are not.”
