Fire on E. Saratoga in Ferndale

(Crystal A. Proxmire, Feb. 2, 2017)

Ferndale, MI – At about 11:45 pm on Sunday, firefighters from Ferndale, Hazel Park, Madison Heights and Royal Oak were dispatched to 341 E. Saratoga (between Woodward Ave. and Paxton) for a fire.  The fire appears to have originated in the upper level of the two story home.  The cause of the fire was still under investigation as of 1 am Monday.

Firefighters cut power to the home and used a nearby hydrant to control the fire. They also used a fan to help dissipate the smoke which had filled both the house and the street. Pieces of siding had to be removed so that the the ventilation area under the peak of the roof could be assessed.

One resident was taken to the hospital with respiratory issues.  None of the other residents were injured.

UPDATE: The homeowner contacted oc115 to clarify that the home is not a duplex, but a two story home. This article has been updated to reflect that correction.  Upon follow up, Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan stated that the upstairs was being rented to a relative.  A man on the scene identified himself as the roommate of the man living upstairs.  Sullivan said that the home had not been registered as a rental.  Sullivan also stated that a heater may have been the cause of the fire, but that the report from the Fire Marshall had not yet been finalized.
