Police Seeking Witnesses to Fatal Crash on Opdyke in Auburn Hills

(Auburn Hills Police, Jan. 6, 2016)

Auburn Hills, MI – On January 5, 2017, at approximately 11:00 a.m., personnel from the Auburn Hills Police and Fire Departments responded to a crash on Opdyke Rd. near Knollwood St.

Three vehicles were involved in the crash, a maroon Chevrolet Equinox, a blue Ford sedan and a gravel hauler semi- truck. Upon arrival emergency personnel discovered that the driver of the Chevrolet Equinox, a  71-year- old Pontiac man, was deceased. The occupants of the blue Ford and the truck driver were not injured in the crash.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the driver of the Chevrolet Equinox was traveling  southbound on Opdyke Road near Knollwood St. when it drifted across all lanes and into on-coming traffic where it struck the gravel hauler head-on. The Chevrolet then struck the blue Ford sedan that was also traveling northbound Opdyke Road.

The gravel hauler’s fuel tank was damaged in the crash causing it to leak fuel onto the roadway.  The Auburn Hills Fire Department and the Oakland County Hazmat Team worked to mitigate and contain the fuel spill.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality was notified.  The Southeast Oakland County Crash Investigation Team (SOCCIT) is investigating the crash.  The SOCCIT team is comprised of crash investigators from Auburn Hills, Troy, Bloomfield  Twp., Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham, and Clawson.

Opdyke Road between South Boulevard  and Auburn Road was closed during the investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact the Auburn Hills Police  Department at 248-370- 9460.
