(City of Ferndale, Dec. 15, 2016)
Ferndale, MI – The City of Ferndale will provide the Kulick Community Center as a temporary shelter from the cold temperatures, which are expected to be in the single digits today and tomorrow. The center will be open to the public today, Thursday, Dec. 15, between 9:30 a.m. and 8 p.m., and tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Subfreezing temperatures can be dangerous and even life-threatening for people who don’t take the proper precautions,” said Ferndale Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan.
He also offered the following precautionary tips from FEMA:
Stay indoors as much as possible and limit your exposure to the cold
Dress in layers and keep dry
Check on family, friends, and neighbors who are at risk and may need additional assistance
Know the symptoms of cold-related health issues, such as frostbite and hypothermia, and seek medical attention if health conditions are severe
Bring your pets indoors or ensure they have a warm shelter area with unfrozen water
Make sure your vehicle has an emergency kit that includes an ice scraper, blanket, and flashlight, and keep the fuel tank above half full
The Kulick Community Center is located at 1201 Livernois in Ferndale. Their phone number is 248-544-6767. The warming center is intended to provide temporary relief from the cold temperatures; the center does not provide meals, bedding, or medical services.
