Bloomfield Twp. Senior Sent over $8,600 to Scam Artist in Jamaica
(Bloomfield Twp. Police, Dec. 8, 2016)
On December 6, officers spoke with an elderly woman from [address withheld by oc115]. She said, starting in early November, she received phone calls from several  people who all claimed to be from Publishers Clearing House and the Federal Trade  Commission. The resident was told that she won a prize but would have to pay several  expenses to get it. The callers directed the victim to several drug stores throughout Oakland County to send MoneyGrams to cover the prize expenses. Over a two-week period, the woman sent over $8600. The detective investigating the case found that the MoneyGrams were all sent an unidentifiable person in Jamaica. The calls were not legitimate and were placed to defraud the victim out of her money.
To avoid being a victim, the Bloomfield Township Police Department is recommending that residents call for guidance prior to sending money, gift cards, personal information,  etc. to any unsolicited requests.
