Man Investigated for Marijuana Grow After Unintentionally Firing Gun Through Front Door and into Neighbor’s Home

INCIDENT: 15:00 hrs. – Brandon Township – Reckless Discharge of a Firearm/Possession of Marijuana w/ Intent to Distribute – #16-209204
SUMMARY: Deputies responded to the 400 block of Dons Ct. for a subject who had accidentally discharged a firearm in his home. The projectile struck his neighbor’s house causing damage. Deputies met with the subject who stated that he had been standing inside his front door showing his 52 year old girlfriend how to safely handle his .45 caliber semi-auto pistol when he accidentally discharged the firearm. The bullet shattered the glass of his front door before striking his neighbor’s home. Deputies secured the weapon and then checked with the neighbor whose home was struck by the stray bullet. The neighbor stated he had heard a gunshot followed by a loud noise inside his home. He checked his living room and observed a small hole in his wall and another small hole in his couch. No one was injured as a result of the accidental discharge of the firearm.
OUTCOME OF INCIDENT: While Deputies were interviewing the suspect, they detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the interior of the residence. The suspect stated that he was a Medical Marijuana Patient and indicated that he was registered with the State of Michigan. The homeowner advised Deputies that he had Marijuana plants in his basement. The subject consented to a search of his home and led Deputies into the basement. Based on their observations, Deputies determined that the suspect was not in compliance with the laws regarding Medical Marijuana as he had over the amount of plants (21) he is allowed, his not a care giver and he had an additional 5 pounds of marijuana. He admitted he has been selling marijuana. Deputies contacted the Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET) and advised them of the circumstances surrounding the investigation. Detectives from the Narcotics Enforcement Team responded to the scene and will be continuing with the investigation. Deputies processed the scene and recovered a spent shell casing and the bullet. The incident remains under investigation.
SUSPECT INFORMATION: 56 year old male, resident of Brandon Township released pending further investigation and presentation to the Prosecutors’ Office
VICTIM INFORMATION: 65 year old male, resident of Brandon Township.
