Local Author to Present Book Talk on Underground
Railroad Nov. 22
(EVENT page)
FERNDALE, MI – Evelyn Millstein, a Royal Oak-based Librarian who has studied African American history for seventy of her eighty-six years, comes to the Ferndale Library on Tue, Nov 22 to discuss her new book The Underground Railroad: A Movement That Changed America.
Millstein will illustrate how the brave actions of those coordinating the Railroad helped abolish slavery in the United States. The book, published independently in 2015, is just one substantial part of Millstein’s lifelong advocacy for expanding and strengthening coverage of African American history in the K-12 curriculum.
Millstein retired in 2012 and spent the next few years completing her book on the Underground Railroad. At eighty-six, this is the first book she has ever written, but her time spent as a Reference Librarian at Eastpointe Memorial Library and the Weston Charter School in Detroit allowed her the chance to collaborate with teachers in making presentations to classrooms during Black History Month.
Millstein has worked hard these last 20 years, culminating with the publication of this book, to inspire local educators to include Black History in the lesson plan all year round, not just for the month of February. Her book is an exceptional panoramic portrait of the brave people who risked their lives to help the Underground Railroad, and recent reviews have particularly praised Millstein’s accessible narration and comprehensive coverage of a story in American history that’s never been fully told.
