Ferndale Library Adds
Delivery Service to Senior Apartments
(Ferndale Area District Library, Nov. 14, 2016)
FERNDALE, Mich. (Nov 10, 2016)– Starting in 2015, the Ferndale Library began a delivery service to housing complexes, carrying the most important cargo in the world: wisdom, knowledge, and literature. That’s right, Ferndale’s Traveling Library finds Interim Director Darlene Hellenberg visiting Withington West and Autumn House apartments once a month, (typically the first Wednesday), to provide specially selected titles for residents to check out and borrow for one month. As the program continues, the Ferndale Library hopes more residents can join.
“Delivering books to the residents of Autumn House and Withington West has been such a wonderful experience,” said Hellenberg. “With the Traveling Library, we’re able to serve an area of our community that can’t always make it into our building to access materials or services.”
Hellenberg took over as Interim Director in September, having beforehand served as Ferndale’s Head Reference Librarian where she particularly excelled in curating recommendations. “ I love picking out titles that I know the people who come to this program will like.” Now, Hellenberg is hoping more folks at Autumn House and Withington West will consider signing up.
Each month residents take advantage of this program by selecting books and audio books specially selected to meet their tastes. Even in its first year, Hellenberg has seen the impact it can have. “One of our outreach patrons lost a ton of weight because of the cook books we brought!”
Participation is easy. To join, all one needs is a driver’s license or state ID with a current address. Residents can apply for a library card whenever the Traveling Library visits either of the complexes for its monthly delivery.
“We would love to have more people participate,” Hellenberg said.
