Deer Struck by Car in Downtown Birmingham, Accidents Increasing Countywide

Birmingham, MI – A deer was injured on Old Woodward Avenue in Downtown Birmingham on Oct 20 when it was struck by a car, according to Downtown Publications.  Police told the magazine that the buck had to be put down.
Deer in urban and suburban settings are becoming more and more common, and Oakland County has the highest amount of deer-vehicle accidents in the state.  The Michigan Deer Crash Coalition was created in 1996.  According to their website “In the Great Lakes State, there is an average of 185 deer/vehicle crashes each day. Reported deer/vehicle crashes in Michigan increased in 2015 to 47,001,from the 45,600 crashes reported in 2014, many crashes also go unreported, so actual crash numbers are much higher.
In 2015, Oakland County had the most deer/vehicle crashes with 1,873 crashes. The remaining top nine were Kent (1,528), Jackson (1,324), Lapeer (1,230), Ingham (1,087) Eaton (1,071), Washtenaw (1,062), Genesee (1,037), Calhoun (1,009) and Montcalm (999).”
The Coalition gives simple advice that can help prevent some accidents. “All motorists should ‘think deer’ whenever they are behind the wheel, and drive defensively, as if a deer can appear at any moment, because they can!”
