2016 Candidate Interview Evan Agnello for OCC Trustee
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Oct. 20, 2016)
Oak Park, MI – Evan Agnello is one of over a dozen people who are running for Oakland County Community College (OCC) Trustee. There are three open seats. This voluntary position helps oversee the administration and the budgeting process of the institution. Those running include Evan Agnello, Susan E. Anderson, Kathleen Anna Bertolini, Jessica Gingell, Pam Jackson, Thomas W. Kelly, Thomas E. Kuhn, Terrell VanCleef Lockart, Max C. Milstein, Emily Mixter, Charles E. Murphy, Christian Noordhoorn, James Paul O’Rilley, John Randle Sr, E. Wadsworth Sherrod III, Eric J. Siegel, and Tim Terpening.
When asked why people should vote for him, Agnello said “I have a number of ideas. I believe there are some solutions. I do work with municipalities on a daily basis. I understand they have a restricted budget, and they have a fiduciary responsibility to their tax payers. I went to school during that time period where I can still relate to the students.
“I also don’t have the mentality that I am an educational expert. I understand as a trustee my responsibility is to the taxpayers, but I am not the expert in the classroom. So what I would like to propose when I become trustee, is meet with the faculty members on a regular basis who are our educational experts and find out how do we conduct various processes. As well as within our administration, we need to understand what processes they run through assigning students up for classes, in doing billing statements, running through our payroll and making sure everything is efficient. I don’t necessarily want to cut costs as much as we want to make sure all the processes are efficient, which helps improve morale at companies and community colleges. So I think I come to the table with a much different mentality and outside the box thinking that isn’t standard to the position.”
In his interview with oc115, Agnello talked about making sure degrees being offered match up with opportunities in Oakland County, and about increasing enrollment by having OCC professors teaching offsite at businesses so there can be a more educated workforce. He also talked about his work as an information technology manager.
