2016 Candidate Interview Congressperson Brenda Lawrence
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Oct. 7, 2016)
Southfield, MI – United States Congressperson Brenda Lawrence is seeking her second term representing the 14th District. Also running for the seat are Republican Howard Klausner, Libertarian Gregory Creswell and Green Party Candidate Marcia Squier.
Congressperson Lawrence has represented the public in a progression of ways, starting out on Southfield School Board, then City Council, then Mayor of Southfield, and 2014 she was elected to serve in Congress. The 14th District makes an oddly-shaped “S” through SE Michigan and includes Pontiac, West Bloomfield, Farmington Hills, Southfield, Royal Oak Township, Parts of Detroit, Hamtramck, Harper Woods and the Grosse Pointes.
When asked why people should vote for her, Congressperson Lawrence said “Experience matters. Look at my record. I have passed more bills than some of my fellow members who are senior to me, ‘cause I put my nose to the grindstone and I have been working very, very hard. I stood up and fought as a freshman, I say freshwoman, in Congress. I literally forced a hearing on the Flint water situation because I’m not one who is intimidated or can be harassed into conforming in a certain issue. I want to fight and be a voice for the people.”
In her interview with oc115, she talked about reviving the Mayor’s Caucus, and serving on the Skilled Trades Caucus and others. She talked about the need to bring people together around issues where they agree – like infrastructure and budget items, instead of tacking on issues that people know will create unnecessary division. She also talked in general about why people should exercise their right to vote.
