“One project that I’m really interested in working on is building some official relationships between BPS and the community,” Young said.  “And we’ve already seen those a little bit…. The relationship between BPS and NEXT, which is a 50+ community and that relationship has existed for a long time and is an important one.  Actually members of NEXT volunteer in our schools and that’s really special, so I want to see more of that.  I want to see businesses have an official role with BPS and enhance our curriculum with real-world learning.  I want to see individuals help teachers out with resources.  I want to see more contribution come in to the Birmingham Education Foundation.  So just building those relationships between the district and the community, I think that’s important.”
In her interview with oc115, Young talked about volunteering with Birmingham Youth Assistance, how she would prioritize budgeting, and how being the mother of a 5 month old has inspired her to get involved in making the school district the best it can be.
