Thermostats for Recall Notices after Fire in Troy
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Sept. 15, 2016)
Troy, MI -The folks at Troy Medical Plaza had no idea that the thermostat in their building had been similar to one ordered recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (SPSC) until it caught fire on Wednesday morning.
According to Assistant Fire Chief Chuck Riesterer, firefighters responded to a report of smoke in the building. “Upon arrival, occupants were out of the building.Firefighters confirmed a haze of smoke on the second level of a large two-story commercial office building. Further investigation revealed that the smoke was emanating from a burning thermostat,” Riesterer said.
After the fire was out and the building vented to clear the smoke, occupants were able to return to work. Fire investigators researched the thermostat and found that a similar model White-Rogers thermostat was under recall as a fire hazard. The recall was issued in 2014.
“All businesses and home owners should check their thermostat and compare the make and model to see if it is under recall by the CPSC. If it is found to be affected, it is recommended the device be removed immediately. Have a qualified heating and cooling contractor replace it with a properly listed device approved by the HVAC manufacturer,” Riesterer said.
