Ferndale Library Celebrates
Expanded Hours With ‘First Friday’ Festivities, Sep 9
FERNDALE, Mich. (Aug 29, 2016)– The Ferndale Area District Library staff is ecstatic to be back on Fridays, opening its doors again Sep. 9 at 10 am for the first time in more than two years. Ferndale citizens went to the polls on Aug. 2 to show a majority support for a millage increase to boost the Library’s operating budget and allow it to re-open on Fridays, as well as upgrade its public computer workstations, order more on-demand digital resources (like eBooks and online learning tools) and organize more literacy programs for K-12th grade readers.
One of the biggest reasons that the Library’s Board of Trustees proposed the millage increase, was that a recent survey showed patrons desire to regain regular business hours on Fridays. This was a regrettable and unavoidable cut decided upon in early 2014, as the Library was working its way to recovery after the 2008 recession impacted its revenue, dependent as it is upon property tax values.
On Sep. 9, we will RE-OPEN on Fridays (10am-6pm). We’ll be celebrating all day on that First Friday with a special outdoor carnival at 4pm.
We’re encouraging everyone to stop in and see us on Sept 9 for a ‘First Friday’ Carnival: an assortment of casual festivities like live music, activities, refreshments, a performance by juggler, Will Oltman, and an exclusive reading by local author Josh Malerman of one of his new scary stories.
10 am & 4 pm – Free Door Prizes for anyone who comes in (while supplies last)
4:00 pm – 6 pm – Courtyard Carnival, featuring: Ice Cream from Treat Dreams! Plus: Live music, Bean Bag Toss games, Giant Jenga, Popcorn, Sidewalk Chalk, juggler Will Oltman and Birdbox author Josh Malerman, reading a brand new short story.
We’re also be offering amnesty on overdue fines for any item returned Sep 9-Sep 17. However, this amnesty will not be applied to fines already accrued for previously/recently returned items. But, if you’ve been dreading a return to the library because of a massively-overdue book or movie, this will be the week to come in…particularly on the 9th!
Meanwhile, we are working our way towards being open Sundays somewhere down the line, so stay tuned.
