Grants Available for Teachers through Michigan Youth Arts, Deadline Nov. 11
(Michigan Youth Arts, Aug. 27, 2016)
Ferndale, MI – Michigan Youth Arts, with assistance from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA), is offering Michigan K-12 schools grants of up to $1,500 to pay for arts-related equipment or supplies that will be used within a classroom or school setting. In its third year, the Arts Equipment & Supplies Grant may be applied to a number of fine or performing arts subjects, including but not limited to: visual art, instrumental music, vocal music, theatre, dance, creative writing, media arts, and more. The grant may also be used toward the repair of existing equipment and supplies. Funding totaling $60,000 is being provided by MCACA.
The primary goal of this grant is to get art supplies into schools with the greatest need.
“It’s important for legislators, parents, and community members to know that high-quality arts education programs have a tangible positive impact on children,” said Marianne Dorais, Executive Director of Michigan Youth Arts. “We thank MCACA for giving us the opportunity to provide arts teachers with access to the best classroom resources possible.”
Each grant may be used to purchase or repair classroom materials for a wide variety of K-12 fine and performing arts subjects, including visual arts, band, orchestra, choir, theatre, dance, creative writing, and media arts. Last year, the most popular items requested were painting supplies, clay, musical instruments, sheet music, and audio/visual equipment. Grant applications are due by November 11, 2016.
“The Arts Equipment & Supplies Grant helps address the problem of under-funded arts education programs within our schools,” said John Bracey, Executive Director of MCACA. “We believe that without proper supplies, equipment, or equipment in good repair, students are not getting the opportunity to experience a complete education that includes the arts. These grants are our small attempt to improve access to high-quality arts resources.”
The 2016-17 Arts Equipment & Supplies Grant cycle is the third year for this collaborative effort between Michigan Youth Arts and MCACA to assist arts classrooms with equipment and supplies across the state. In addition, the two organizations have been working together since 2012 to present the “Arts & Culture Trek” grant, for which K-12 schools may apply for up to $500 to cover the transportation costs of an arts- or culture-related field trip.
