Ferndale, MI – Rust Belt Market, the continuously evolving epicenter of Ferndale cool, is adding Rust Belt Ad late Fridayssomething new to their artist’s market and event space – a bar! Not only is this an obvious bonus as the market is a beautiful and popular place for weddings, but it means that as shoppers come in from the sunshine to enjoy a unique variety of locally made products and art, they can also enjoy a cool adult beverage.

Revel Bar & Events officially opens Friday, July 15 offering Michigan craft beer, signature cocktails, wine, and specialty coffee provided by White Pine Coffee Roasters of Lake Orion.

The custom-built habitat fits in well with the rest of the Rust Belt’s unique design features, including lighting fixtures made of branches and an entrance way comprised of scrapped pallets leading to the event space.

“Our mantra has been to do really cool, interesting things and figure out how to make money out of it,” said Chris Best who co-owns Rust Belt with his wife Tiffany.

It began five years ago when they leased space in the former Gap building at the corner of 9 Mile and Woodward.  They filled it with high quality artists and an insistence on quality displays.  They expanded in 2014 with the help of BubbleTea Ada crowd-sourcing initiative to add the wedding space.  Getting the liquor license was a logical next step once they realized how popular the event space is.

“We did not really consider that, but someone I met while networking told me there was a shortage of event spaces in the area.  We had extra space, and there was a need.  So we put that together and made something that fits the needs of the community,” Best said.  Revel is another way to give their customers what they want.

He credits the Rust Belt’s success not only to the great customers and vendors, but also to the way the Ferndale business community connects and supports each other. “Whatever you’re doing, you can’t do it alone. So go out and meet as many people as you can.  Make connections and be a good connection for candlewickshoppeADblueothers,” Best said.  For example, at a certain point he realized that cleaning the market floors himself was not a good use of his time, and through the Ferndale Area Chamber of Commerce he met Jay McMillan of Royal Services, who now has expertly trained staff to keep the Rust Belt clean so the Bests can focus on the many other tasks of running a business.

That community-spirit works well on a macro level inside the market too.  Being in close quarters with other artists and creators, the vendors learn from each other.  “They pick up things from each other – little things like rearranging your shop regularly and making it always look new,” Best said.  They also often will watch each other’s shops and there are a couple people who work for various shop owners when they need a break or day off.  Best likes watching the businesses succeed, and knowing that so many of them Pledge_side_bluecount on the Rust Belt being run well, inspires and motivates him to do his best.  “We try to be good leaders.  We give them good resources.  Whoever we know, they know. Whether they need someone for insurance, or for building something, we share our resources openly.  We’re invested in their success.”
