Hazel Park’s Wilfred Webb Dies at Age 95

Hazel Park, MI – A beloved member of the Hazel Park community, Dr. Wilfred D. Webb passed away on July 2 at the age of 95. Webb was a State Representative and an educator and Superintendent of Hazel Park Schools. Webb’s name graces one of the district’s elementary schools.
Webb served Hazel Park Schools for 35 years, starting as a teacher then working his way to jr. high Principle, high school counselor and Superintendent.
Webb teamed up with Judge Eugene Moore and founded Hazel Park Youth Assistance in 1953, a collaborative effort between the school district and the courts to “keep kids in the classroom and out of the courtroom). The program was so successful that Oakland County now works with all communities in the county on Youth Assistance programs.
In 1985 he was inducted into the Michigan Education Hall of Fame.
Dr. Webb served as a State representative from 1982 to 1984 and then from 1986 to 1991. In 1993 then State Rep Sander Levin honored Webb by reading his accomplishments into the Congressional Record, including that “He distinguished himself in the State legislature by fighting for the elderly. One of his chief accomplishments was the passage of a bill to protect the elderly from abuse, a measure that was passed in 1990 for which he was the sole sponsor.”
Levin listed other accomplishments as well, stating including the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award in 1953, Michigan Congress of Parents and Teachers Distinguished Service Award in 1963. In 1970 Alma college, which gave him an honorary LL.D. degree.

“Dr. Wilfred Dwight Webb, age 95 of Hazel Park, Michigan passed away on July 2, 2016 at home. He was born on March 23, 1921 in Rathbone, Michigan to Thomas Franklin and Mary Pettit Webb.
“Dr. Webb is pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Virginia Rose Webb and his brothers, Morley Webb and Cullen Webb.
“He is survived by his son, Stephen (Amy) Webb. Grandfather of Willow, Autumn, Timothy, and Aria. Great-Grandfather of Eliza and (Master) Besi. He is also survived by Ralph Hamlin, his “son” and lifelong friend. Brother-in-law of Patricia Taylor, Colleen Webb Naru, Bethel Webb and James DePalma. Uncle of Maureen (Alan) Hockstra, Myrna (Harry) Woods, Thomas (Elizabeth) Webb, Jean (Greg) Gordon, Cullen D. (Karen) Webb, Rex (Carol) Webb, Rick (Linda) Webb, Robb Taylor and Deanna (James).”
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 6th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Thursday, July 7th from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Hopcroft Funeral Home, 31145 John R. Road (1 block North of 13 Mile Road, West side of John R. Road), Madison Heights, Michigan. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 8th beginning at 9:00 am Instate followed by a 10:00 am service at First United Methodist Church, Hazel Park, Michigan. Burial will take place at Oakview Cemetery, Royal Oak, Michigan.
