Activist for Transgender Community Darnell Jones Dies of Cancer

Ferndale, MI – The LGBTQ community lost an ally and an activist Wednesday as Darnell Jones, Vice President of Gender Identity Network Alliance, died due to complications from cancer.
Jones was a pharmacist by day and an activist at night, helping transgender individuals through the transitioning process with medications and a supportive ear. He helped organize health fairs and support groups at Affirmations Community Center in Ferndale. Jones was also founder of Transcend the Binary, a group committed to helping individuals through their transition process with access to holistic care. He was the keynote speaker for the TransOhio Symposium and has received the Ally of the Year Award and he was recognized at Community Pharmacist of the Year by the Michigan Pharmacy Association
Hannah Hartley, Gender Identity Network Alliance President, released a statement in his honor, saying” GNA wanted to reach out to our community and offer our heartfelt condolences and support to the family of Darnell Jones, the Vice President of our organization. Last night Darnell passed away due to complications from cancer at home with his family. We are saddened to lose such an important ally, contributor and friend.
“At this time our heart goes out to support his family and to all of the friends that have shown their love, support and friendship to him through the years. Personal note from the President: Darnell has been a close trusted friend and cohort with community work and life. Although it has not even been 24 hours, I miss him and honor him personally and professionally.
“GNA will continue to support his work, mission and ideas that have been left behind for the entire LGBT community and one new day for the trans community is still to be unveiled that was another project of his heart and love for us all. Rest in peace Darnell and we send you all of our prayers, love and positivity on this very sad morning. GNA will be posting updates with upcoming information on an upcoming service of gathering to celebrate this man’s life that left the world a much better place than he found it.
