Troy Fire
Dept. Welcomes Campers from Leader Dogs for the Blind
(Chuck Riesterer, Asst. Fire Chief of Troy, June 27, 2016)
Troy, MI – On Sunday June 26, members of the Troy Fire Department, Station #3, welcomed campers from the Leader Dogs for the Bling organization. Twenty-four campers from across the country came to Troy as part of their summer camp program.
Campers, between 16 and 17 years old who present with a wide range of vision loss, are exposed to life around the fire station. While some of the campers may not even travel with a cane, some have experienced complete vision loss. The goal is to give them exposure to the fire department and the available services which they may not able to experience until there is an emergency.
Firefighters volunteered their time to provide tours of the fire station, rides in the fire engine, a ride up in the 100’ ladder truck, trying on firefighter clothing and an opportunity to flow water from a fire hose. All campers’ were provided with a camper’s meal of hamburgers or hotdogs along with all the fixin’s to help make this an enjoyable “camping” experience. When asked, the campers reported that their top two events were the ladder rides and the ride in the fire engine.
This is the third ear that the Troy Fire Department with members from Sation 3 has participated in the Campers Summer Experience. We look forward to participating in years to come.
