Berkley Halts Plans to Allow Multi Unit Homes, Open House Canceled
(C. Proxmire, June 20, 2016)
Berkley, MI – Berkley city officials announced that the Planning Commission Open House slated for June 21 has been canceled and the form based code proposal has been withdrawn. They issued the following statement Monday evening:
“The proposed form based code was intended to establish guidelines for the city to allow a variety of housing types and, ultimately, attract new residents to Berkley and retain long time property owners. The initial discussion arose in response to requests from senior residents to consider more options in the housing stock to accommodate their needs.
“The role of government is to respond to the will of all residents and, on this issue, the residents have made their opposition clear”, said David Barnett, Planning Commission Chairperson. “Ultimately we have a responsibility and a great interest in attracting new families while making it possible for longtime residents to remain in our city.”
