Candidate Interview Tina Creek Barton for Oakland County Clerk and Register of Deeds (video)
(Crystal A. Proxmire, June 16, 2016)
Davisburg, MI – Republican Tina Creek Barton is running for Oakland County Clerk and Register of Deeds. She is running in the primary against Bill Bullard who held the seat prior to the incumbent Lisa Brown. Brown has a Democratic Challenger in the primary, Michael Smith.
Barton is currently the City Clerk for Rochester Hills. Prior to that she was Deputy Clerk in Bloomfield Township. “I think there are three things that make me unique as a candidate,” Barton said. “Those three things are I’m a connector, I’m an innovator and I’m an advocator… I can connect with the people who are educated, maybe living in the high income areas, but I also know what it’s like for the person living in poverty and praying there’s maybe enough money to pay the bills, I’ve been there too.”
She said that as an innovator she’d made Rochester Hills the first city to have online election worker training, and saved the city staff time and resources of coordinating election workers by mail when she switched to scheduling through Eventbrite. And she said that as an advocator she testified in Lansing in opposition to having standardized election equipment across the state, saying that Michigan is not a “one size fits all kind of state.” In her interview she also talked about being a professional and not a politician, and her idea for having satellite offices through the county.
