Ferndale, MI – Becoming an Eagle Scout is a rare achievement, one that less than 1% of all Boy Scouts make. This year Ferndale Troop 1542 had three young men earn the honor.  In a ceremony at Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church in Ferndale Graham Cwychyshyn of Pleasant Ridge, and Kyle Hagle and David Trainees of Oak Park took the pledge.
The young men also gave pins to their parents and to a mentor of their choice. All three chose Pat Landry to pin.
Cwycyshyn thanked many people, including Mr. Schneider, Mr. Potensky and Mr. Keener “for being valuable resources to me going through my Eagle Scout project.”

Hagle spoke about the intimidation of getting involved in Cub Scouts without knowing anyone.  “It was scary coming into Cub Pack 1221 and I’ve been on many camping trips from that point on.  Moving into 1542 was a big stride,” Hagle said.  Addressing a group of Boy Scouts in the front row, Hagle said “And now you guys are kind of where I was at one point.  It’s kind of weird.  It’s surreal.  But I’m really thankful for everybody that helped me get to where I am.”
For Traines being in the scouting program was helpful in many ways.  “This troop helped me become not just an Eagle Scout but who I am today. There’s so many things I do today, marching band, music, school, NHS.  There’s so SaharaAd_03much that this has helped me with.”  He also had a list of thank you’s, including to his Grandparents and Uncle who came from Ohio to see the induction ceremony.
The teens had to earn 21 merit badges in a variety of skills including camping, citizenship in the community (and the nation, and the world), communications, cooking, emergency preparedness or lifesaving, environmental science or sustainability, family life, first aid, personal fitness, personal management, swimming or hiking or cycling.  They also had to complete a service project, and before a review panel.
