(May 30, 2016)
Farmington Hills, MI – Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette today announced he has charged Matthew Parsons, 48 of Waterford, with five counts of possession of child sexually abusive material. Parsons also faces five charges of using a computer to commit a crime and three counts of illegally recording an individual.
“It is our responsibility to secure justice for Michigan’s children, our most vulnerable victims, by prosecuting predators who exploit children,” said Schuette. “The children in these disturbing images were abused again and again by the predators that download and trade their image.”
Parsons was arraigned Saturday morning, and bond was set at $300,000, red door club adcash or surety. He is being held at the Oakland County Jail.
Parsons is employed as a law enforcement officer in Farmington Hills. The officer was placed on administrative leave. Farmington Hills Police Chief Chuck Nebus stated:
“It was shocking and devastating to learn that a Farmington Hills Police Officer, Matthew Parsons, a 48-year-old, 20 year veteran of the department, is alleged to have utilized his personally owned electronic devices to possess child pornography.
“During the past week, the department fully cooperated with investigators from the Internet Crimes against Children Task Force.
“After being interviewed by investigators, Officer Parsons was promptly placed on administrative leave.  After his arraignment on formal state Schrock2015_ad_twocitiescriminal charges, his employment status was changed to suspended without pay. A mandated internal department investigation and hearing will be used to determine his future employment status.
“Members of the department were stunned to learn of the State investigation. Officers shared with me that they want our residents to know that this incident is not reflective of the integrity and dedication of the officers who proudly serve and protect this community. Nothing is more important than earning and maintaining community trust.
Schuette acknowledged the assistance of Farmington Hills Police Chief Charles Nebus and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in this case.
Schuette’s investigation began following a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) that an individual had been Chamber_AD2_rainbowrundownloading child sexually abusive material. Following an investigation by Schuette’s team, the individual alleged to have been downloading the images was identified as Parsons.
It is alleged that Parsons had downloaded at least 10 videos of child sexually abusive material.
Parsons is also alleged to have surreptitiously filmed an adult in the nude.
