Candidate Interview: Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard 2016 (video)
(Crystal A. Proxmire, May 11, 2016)
Ferndale, MI – Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard is running for reelection and will be on the Nov. 8, 2016 ballot. He is the Republican candidate who has served as Sheriff since 1999. Democrat Craig Covey will also be on the ballot.
“I love my job. I love what I do,” Sheriff Bouchard said. “I love to work with the men and women of the Sheriff’s office. Law enforcement obviously has been a passion… I love what we try to do in law enforcement, which is we try to make the community a better place, safer, respond to human needs. At the worst moment of people’s lives, we want to be there to help them through it. We want to prevent tragedy, but when we can’t, we can help them feel respected, help them feel connected, feel that somebody cares. So that’s why I’m running for reelection. I love what I do. I’ve been a police officer almost 30 years so it’s something that’s always in your blood if you have a passion for it.”
In his interview with oc115, Sheriff Bouchard also talked about his years as a patrol officer and the various positions he held as he rose in rank. He also talked about taking a step away from law enforcement to serve in the State Senate where he introduced legislation related to law enforcement and victim’s rights. He talked about the challenges of medical marijuana regulation, the changes in technology of police work, programs that his office is involved in to help the community, and the way that he’s worked to make sure local law enforcement agencies train together so they can better respond to larger-scale police situations.
