Birmingham’s Chester Parking Structure Gets New Equipment, No Longer Takes Cash
(City of Birmingham, April 22, 2016)
BIRMINGHAM, MI – The City of Birmingham’s Chester Street Parking Structure will soon receive advanced traffic control equipment to create a faster and more efficient parking experience. The enhanced system will require parkers to use a credit card to pay for parking. Cash will no longer be accepted. Those who do not have a credit card may go into the Central Parking office (located next to the entrance) to receive a special debit card. The system will not require parkers to use a ticket, which will prevent backups from occurring when a driver is stopped at the exit and unable to locate their ticket. Those who are monthly permit holders will be given new access cards that will simply be held up to a scanner at the entrance and exit (see image at right). “These enhancements have worked well at parking structures in other communities,” said Paul O’Meara, Birmingham City Engineer. “This equipment is more reliable and offers people a fast and efficient way to get in and out of the structure.” The new equipment will be installed on Saturday, April 23 by SP+, a professional parking and ground transportation provider. The equipment will be operational beginning Monday, April 25.
