(Troy Fire Dept, March 25, 2016)
Troy, MI – Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 9:59 pm (2159 Hours).
Location: SMART Bus Garage, 2021 Barrett, Troy, MI 48084
Units Assigned: Eng. 3, Lad. 3, Eng. 4, Lad. 4, Rescue 4, Air Tender 3 and Alliance Mobile Second Alarm Assignment: Eng. 1, Lad. 1, Mobile Command Post Health (EMS Provider)
The Troy Fire Department received a report of 2 buses on fire, in the storage garage, at this location. Units were dispatched. Smoke was reported coming from the garage by arriving Police Officers. And upon their arrival, firefighters confirmed a working fire inside the garage. The facility is a 150,000+ sq. ft., one-story multi-use facility that is used to house, maintain and dispatch buses that operate in the SMART Bus system for Southeast
All of the occupants (employees) were evacuated prior to fire department arrival. Smoke had filled the garage, obscuring view of the fire from the outside. Firefighters worked to gain entry and ventilate the smoke through engineered ventilation openings in the roof. Fire sprinklers helped to contain the fire to the one bus. 3 other buses received minor heat damage from the fire.
Due to the decreased visibility, and the size of the structure, a second alarm was sounded for additional personnel. Once the building was vented, crews worked to suppress the fire. No extension of the fire to the building was discovered. A complete search of the building was conducted to check for other occupants and smoke spread. No other occupants were located, and no further ventilation was required.
The fire appears to have started in the engine compartment, but the cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are incomplete. The building was returned to SMART Bus officials for clean-up and re- occupancy. Normal operations are expected to continue, with only minor interruption. No injuries were reported, and there were no fatalities. Final estimates are incomplete at this time. No further details are available at this time.
NOTE: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the fire was on Tuesday. This was an error in the fire department news release and it has since been updated.
