Deputy Shot Armed Suspect

Pontiac, MI – On Monday, March 14th, at 7:36 p.m., Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Deputies received information that a subject known to them was armed with a handgun and was driving around the city in a white Chevy Trail Blazer. Deputies observed the suspect enter a white Chevy Trail Blazer and a short distance later the Deputies initiated a traffic stop.
The subject, a rear seat passenger, exited the vehicle with a handgun and fled on foot into a backyard in the 400 block of Emerson. Deputies pursued the subject into the backyard and ordered the subject to drop his weapon. The suspect turned towards the Deputies with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun in his hand, at which time, Deputies, in fear for their safety shot at the suspect until he was no longer an imminent danger. The 9 mm semi-automatic handgun was fully loaded with 15-rounds in the magazine and an additional extended fully loaded 30-round magazine was recovered from the subject.
Medical assistance was immediately rendered and EMS summoned. A second semi-automatic handgun was recovered inside the vehicle. The suspect underwent surgery and his condition is stable at this time. The suspect has prior felony convictions for numerous crimes including illegally carrying a concealed weapon and home invasion. Due to the fact that he is a convicted felon, he is not legally allowed to possess any firearm.
The semi-automatic handguns are not registered within the state of Michigan and the Sheriff’s Office has requested the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to expand the search nationwide to attempt to locate the origin of the firearms.
The incident and investigation has been turned over to the Sheriff’s Office Special Investigation Unit. Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be turned over to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for appropriate charges.
