Suspect Leads Police on
Chase Through Hazel Park and Ferndale
(Lt. William Wilson, Ferndale Police, March 9, 2016)
Hazel Park, MI – On 03/08/16 at about 8:30 a.m., Hazel Park Police had a person driving a Kia (PICKENS) flee during a traffic stop. Police chased the vehicle through neighborhoods bordering Ferndale, and it eventually escaped. Shortly after, a Ferndale officer spotted the car at a red light at Wanda / 9 Mile. The officer pulled behind it as another Ferndale patrol car was approaching from the east on 9 Mile. When the officers attempted to make a traffic stop, PICKENS sped up and fled from police to Symes, turned right (north) and sped to Symes / Breckenridge. There he bailed out of the still moving Kia and ran away on foot. The car continued slowly until it crashed into a street sign and came to a stop. PICKENS ran into the residential yards and jumped fences in an attempt to escape.
Officers caught him in a back yard on the 1900 block of Leitch.
PICKENS was arrested and charged with Fleeing and Eluding 3rd, and DWLS. He was arraigned and bond was set at $5000.
DEFENDANT: Freddie Charles PICKENS, b/m, 21 yrs, Detroit resident.
