Ferndale Community
Collaborates in Celebration of High School Student Artists
(FACC Press Release, Feb. 18, 2016)
Ferndale, MI – The Artist in You is a community-wide celebration of student art, featuring works by young talents (grades 10-12) in the Ferndale School District and Center for Advanced Studies and the Arts (CASA.) Students will have their artwork shown in Ferndale exhibitions and compete to have their creations converted into public art. The three top scoring two dimensional (2D) artists will receive a $500 scholarship from the Ferndale Area Chamber of Commerce, while the two top-scoring three dimensional (3D) artists will be granted a $250 scholarship from the Ferndale Arts and Cultural Commission (FACC).
The Artist in You is collaboration between the Ferndale Area Chamber of Commerce, the FACC, and Ferndale Schools with support from the Ferndale Area District Library. Additional sponsorship is provided by the Detroit Art and Business Institute (DABI).
While providing students with a unique opportunity to exhibit, market, and gain exposure for their creative work at a formative age, The Artist in You will also create a lasting contribution to the vibrant landscape of Ferndale through reproductions of the art. Works from the 2015 Artist in You still hang on buildings along Nine Mile Road and Woodward Avenue and are enjoyed daily by visitors, business owners and residents alike.
To enrich the Artist in You program, sponsor Andrea Rosenfeld, fine artist and Founder/CEO of DABI, will provide creative business workshops to the students, preparing them to build a healthy venture and profit from future creations.
Students’ 2D art will be on exhibit at the Ferndale Area District Library from March 14 – April 23, in an exhibition sponsored by the Ferndale Area Chamber of Commerce. There will be a public reception to celebrate on March 31, from 6-8pm. The art will continue to be on display during Ferndale Reads, the library’s annual one-book/one-community program of reading events.
“The Ferndale Area District Library is thrilled to be a part of the Artist in You program,” says Director Jessica Keyser. “This is a wonderful way for the very talented artists of Ferndale High School to gain exposure in the community, and it is delightful to see the artwork displayed throughout town. The Library strives to be an incubator of creativity and innovation in the community, and this program fits perfectly with that goal.”
As an added component of the community outreach program, the student 3D art exhibit (produced by the Ferndale Arts and Cultural Commission at Level One Bank) will be from April 29-June 2. This exhibit will be part of Walk and Roll, a city-wide art walk and bike ride event on May 5, 2016. All winners will be announced in a special reception at Level One Bank on April 29, 2016.
Jim Shaffer and Associates and Level One Bank are the Presenting Sponsors for The Artist in You. Additional sponsorship is provided by Gage Products, Ferndale Schools, Credit Union ONE, and LocalHop. Additional support is necessary to make this educational opportunity a success. Sponsorship funds a lasting community project, but also provides marketing opportunities for the sponsor.
