Berkley: Norup Students
Celebrate Chinese New Year
(Berkley Schools, Feb. 13, 2016)
Berkley, MI – On Monday, February 8, Norup students celebrated the Chinese New Year with a school-wide Spring Festival celebration. Led by the Chinese I class and teacher Erika Kwok, Norup students experienced different stations including calligraphy, paper cutting, lantern riddles, bean bag game, lion dance and Spring Festival food sampling. The Chinese I students showed their peers what they have been learning in the class during the Festival.
To prepare for the Spring Festival, the Chinese class took a field trip to a Chinese market. In China, it is a tradition for families to make the dumplings together on the New Year’s Eve and eat them for the New Year’s Eve dinner. Students visited the market with a shopping list of ingredients to make their favorite dumplings and Spring Festival snacks. They prepared for the trip by learning how to say all the ingredients in Chinese and how to ask the workers if they couldn’t find the items.
Following the field trip, on dumpling day, students learned how to make dumplings in class. Students used the ingredients from the market to prepare their own filling. Mrs. Kwok shared with students how to wrap the dumplings and the class wrapped and cooked their own.
The Festival showcased learning from the Chinese I class and Chinese culture to Norup students. It was a joyous event for all!
