Dr. Willie W. Payne, writer historian, and producer of the award winning performance Payne, a fraternity member and former Pontiac mayor, refines the art of storytelling in his one hour and 30 minute performance.
“This is my way of teaching and preserving a rich history in an entertaining manner.” Payne explained. Dressed in period custom and using music, song, dance, drumming and projected visuals of safe houses used on Michigan’s Underground Railroad route, Payne takes his audience on the actual route and share true accounts of how slaves escaped captivity with help from Detroit, Pontiac, Farmington Hills, Orchard Lake and other abolitionists.
You’ll meet Wellington Hullm, the great-grandson of the first African family that settle in Farmington after returning from Canada in 1865. The family still owns the five acre property at 11 Mile and Orchard Lake Road. Even though slaves were brought to America as laborers and servants, because of their tenacity to be free and the help they receives from Michigan abolitionists, they and their descendants have carved out different destinies for themselves as American citizens.
