Man and Youngster Die After Falling Through Ice on Alderman Lake
(Oakland County Sheriff’s Dept, Feb. 1, 2016)
UPDATED.
Highland Twp, MI -The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office received a call to the Sheriff’s Operations Center at 10:36am reporting a man and his son had fallen through the ice on Alderman Lake in Highland Township while ice fishing approximately 250 to 300 feet off shore.
The Highland Township Substation Commander, Lieutenant Matt Snyder, along with Deputies, Highland Township Fire Department, and Star EMS immediately responded to the lake to begin rescue efforts.
Lt. Snyder, Commander of the Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, and Deputies arrived on scene, and divers entered the water at 10:55am where the man and young boy had fallen through the ice. Both individuals were recovered in 8 to 12 feet of water and turned over to Highland Township Firefighters and EMS personnel.
The father, a 30 year old Highland Township Resident, and the son, a 4 year old Highland Township resident, were both transported to Huron Valley Hospital in Commerce Township where they were pronounced deceased.
“This is a horrific reminder that we should always hold safety first when we undertake water related activities. No ice is safe ice especially due to the mild weather we have experienced this winter. Our thoughts are with the family during this unthinkable time,” said Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard. The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Marine Unit
