Oak Park, MI – Michael Sumner of Waterford has pled no contest to embezzlement and was sentenced to 334 days in jail after being charged with stealing money from the City of Oak Park.
Sumner is the husband of the former Deputy City Clerk of Oak Park, Stephanie Sumner. The couple is accused of stealing more than $433,000 over the course of two years.
Stephanie Sumner submitted 54 invoices for checks made out to her husband under the guise garden16_laura_champagneof expenses related to voting precinct consolidation efforts. Michael Sumner was sentenced on Dec. 17, 2015.  Stephanie Sumner is also charged with embezzlement and has a pretrial hearing scheduled for Jan. 21.
The City’s insurance carrier has reimbursed the City for the missing funds.
According to The Daily Tribune, the couple filed bankruptcy in 2012, which was denied. They filed again for bankruptcy last month, listing liabilities of $182,000 against assets of $134,000.
