Clawon, MI – The owners of the Woodpile BBQ Shack in Clawson are fired up and ready to go after their official ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday. The modestly-sized diner has the goal of being “a destination for food and atmosphere that is not high-brow,” according to co-owner Scott Moloney.
Moloney, who also owns Treat Dreams in Ferndale, partnered with Detroit BBQ owner Tim Idzikowski to start Woodpile in what used to be an old A&W Drive in. The root beer and roller skate roots are nearly unnoticeable after the redesign of the restaurant. Donoto Mongelli did the woodwork, which features a hand-done front panel made of pine coated with vinegar and formed with steel wool. The logo for Woodpile is a modern-looking orange flame that shows where the heart of their business is at – the grill.
The opening featured mouth-watering ribs and slightly-spicy rib tips. The sausage with cheese is sure to be a favorite. Other items include candied bacon, sweet potato mash and bread pudding. And for those who enjoy unusual gourmet ice cream, they are well-stocked with Treat Dreams flavors like mac and cheese and salted caramel.
In the spring people will be able to sit outside and enjoy the atmosphere of Downtown Clawson, though technically they are just outside the Central Business District boundaries.
Joining Moloney and Idzikowski for the ribbon cutting were partners Zac Idzikowski and Brandon Hannish.
They were welcomed by members from the Clawson Chamber of Commerce, and given a key to the city by Clawson Mayor Penny Luebs.
Woodpile BBQ Shack is located at 303 S. Main, south of 14 Mile Road. More info: http://www.woodpilebbqshack.com/.
