Reporter Food: Avon Donuts
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Jan. 3, 2016)
Pontiac, MI – Ah. Donuts. There is no more perfect food for when I have to wake up early to go to a meeting of some sort. Convenient, cheap, a burst of sugary energy, and easy to eat in the car – what more could a reporter on the go ask for?
But I gotta tell ya, the pastries at Avon Donuts in Pontiac are worth slowing down for. Inside their cute little building by the train tracks on Woodward Avenue there are often people sitting at the counters, taking their time with coffee, donuts and community gossip. Though it’s easy to grab a dozen and go, the warm sweet smell and the view of traffic rushing past makes it easy to want to and stay.
For me though, it’s usually a minute or two of tough decisions before heading out to the parking lot for a bite or two before I get back on my way. Then the last few minutes before my meeting is spent savoring the rest.
Most recently in the parking lot of the County complex I was joyously licking the blue frosting coated with Fruity Pebbles cereal off a donut that was still soft and warm, when I felt like someone was watching me. Sure enough, not far was another person gearing up for a meeting stuffing the last bit of a donut in their mouth too. Not sure if it was an Avon donut, but if it wasn’t they were probably missing out.
So far my favorite has been the maple and bacon. I can’t even really describe how or why, but those flavors were made for each other.
Other good choices are the peanut butter crunch, the strawberry glazed (topped with a real strawberry so you’re getting some fruit in when you eat it), and the coconut cream. They’ve got plenty of traditional favorites too, all baked fresh daily and served with a smile.
I could not find a website, but they are on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/avondonuts.
