Farmington Hills, MI – On Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 1:51 a.m. Farmington Hills Police and Fire Departments responded to the Riviera Cinema located at 30170 Grand River Avenue on a report of smoke in the building. Police officers arrived and found light smoke on the second floor. A search of the building revealed that someone attempted to start a fire in two locations in a projector room on the second floor of the theater. The Fire Department extinguished one of the fires located on a desk in the projector room. The other fire had extinguished itself. Theater patrons safely evacuated prior to the arrival of police and fire personnel as a result of the activation of the theater’s fire alarm system. No injuries were dinos02sidelogo3reported and damage from the fires was minor.
During the movie the suspect exited the theater and entered the projector room where he started the fires. Investigators were able to track the suspect, identified as 24 year old Nicholas Glenn Chelar of Dearborn Heights, to a residence in Farmington Hills where he was taken into custody.
The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office issued a prosecutor’s order for Mr. Chelar for Arson 3rd Degree, a 10 year felony, and Larceny in a Building, a four year felony. He was arraigned December 21st in front of Magistrate Matthew Friedrich at the 47th District Court and given a $200,000 cash bond. Mr. Chelar’s preliminary exam is scheduled for December 30, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. in front of Judge Marla Parker of the 47th District Court.
