Ferndale Approves New
Precincts and Polling Locations
(City of Ferndale, Dec. 16, 2015)
Ferndale, MI—Election polling locations will change for residents of the City of Ferndale, effective Jan. 1, 2016. The revised polling locations were presented by the City Clerk and adopted by Council at Monday evening’s Ferndale City Council meeting.
According to Ferndale City Clerk Marne McGrath, the precinct changes were proposed to alleviate long wait times during national elections as well as to accommodate redistricting by local school districts.
“Several of our voting precinct hosts—including Ferndale’s Taft School, University High School, and Harding Administration Building and Hazel Park’s Edison School—have been eliminated as part of the school districts’ efforts to restructure and reassess their facility needs,” McGrath said. “The loss of four precinct facilities dictated our need to reassess polling locations.”
McGrath said that the new precincts should also reduce wait times at larger elections.
“Turnout in the 2012 presidential election was 63%, with 10,379 voters participating and line wait times of two hours or more reported,” McGrath said. “While several factors contributed to the wait times, the City decided it would be prudent to expand the number of voting locations.”
The number of polling locations will increase from seven to nine, with a reduction in the average number of voters per precinct from 2,225 to 1,900.
McGrath said that all voters, regardless of precinct or change status, will receive new voter identification cards via mail in January. In addition, new precinct maps and other essential voting information will be included in the City’s quarterly newsletter (mailed in January), on the City’s social media sites, and on the City’s website at www.ferndalemi.gov.
