Local Org Love: Huron Valley Council for Arts

Highland, MI -The word hero is much like art. It can mean a thousand different things to a thousand different people. To HVCA, our heroes are you: members of our community who care about art and seeing art in our corner of the world.
Why do the arts matter? Art at its core is a way for us to give breath to our dreams; to see them take flight and soar. For more than 15 years the HVCA has helped thousands of individuals realize their dreams. Our latest initiative, Arts For Life, reaches even further into Oakland County to make sure that citizens from age 0 to 110 have an opportunity to explore their dreams and watch them fly.
For our youth, HVCA offers a number of opportunities that engage our children in the whole spectrum of the arts. One such program HVCA has introduced is “Adopt a Classroom”. This initiative provides educational based art programs, which include music, puppetry and theater, to over 1,200 Title 1, Great Start, Head Start, Elementary and Middle School children.
Additionally, HVCA has a new exciting program – HVCA KIDS Club – which offers free access and programs on various types of art to all families on a monthly basis and helps children to celebrate their unique talents. HVCA also has an education mission and continues to seek out opportunities to enrich our community with classes and workshops of all kinds.
Art appreciation isn’t just for our youth; it is for all of us. We invite you to come and explore the arts with us at HVCA by attending one of our free monthly art gallery exhibitions that features the works of professional artists from our region. While you are visiting the gallery you can take a piece of the art world home with you when you purchase an item from our Art Shop featuring the works of many arts representing many artistic disciplines. For those music enthusiasts we invite you to take in a concert during one of our classical or Kettle Series music events.   Or if you just want to know more and learn how to do it yourself, HVCA as classes available for almost anything art related you could imagine and if we don’t have what you want, our Executive Director Erin Sabo is on hand to help get what you want.
The final piece of the Arts for Life Initiative is “Seniors Exploring the Arts” a program that brings free art classes to Senior Centers and retirement communities across Oakland County giving them the opportunity to find their inner artist, while keeping active and continually challenging their mind.

In addition, to receiving the warm fuzzy feeling that knowing you are making a difference in the world gives you; you will also receive an opportunity to be a part of our “Holiday Heroes” tree at our Festival of Trees display.
HVCA is a haven for so many and year after year the number of people we are able to reach grows, feeding the need to create and inherently giving back more to our corner of the world. As we continue to expand and diversify we hope to become a destination in Southeastern Michigan for arts and culture.
