Auburn Hills Divergent
Diamond Bridge Crash Report
(Auburn Hills Police Chief Doreen Olko, Dec. 11, 2015)
I keep getting questions about the number of crashes we’ve had on the divergent diamond interchange at University and I-75. It is such a new design that I know people are intrigued by it.
We have not noticed that there is a rash of crashes. We have had 7 crashes since November 9th. None of them involved an angle crash at an intersection or people going the wrong way.
Of the 7:
~2 single motor vehicle, cars in the ditch
~4 rear end crashes, unable to stop in time
~1 side swipe same direction, improper lane change
Nothing really unusual here. We have noticed that the bridge carries a MUCH higher volume of traffic with fewer back-ups, which is a positive.
I know it takes some time to get accustomed to it but overall I think it is really, really good for the traffic flow.
