Kids Help Metalliclaus and
Mayor Light the Ferndale Tree
(C. Proxmire, Nov. 29, 2015)
The holiday tree in the median of 9 Mile and Woodward has officially been lit, in pure “Ferndale Normal” style, with a black-bearded cynical Santa named Metalliclaus helping to rock the tradition.
Children and adults stood in awe as Metalliclaus strummed silly Christmas carols on his ukulele. Then Mayor Dave Coulter, accompanied by Councilmembers Melanie Piana and Greg Pawlica, gave Metalliclaus a guitar-shaped key to the city and invited children up to do the big countdown.
Once the children hit “one,” the trees in the median lit up with bright blue and white lights, and everyone cheered in delight.
Metalliclaus is a special guest of Detroit Comics for the holidays. On Saturday, December 5 he’ll be at the store (23333 Woodward Ave) from 1pm to 5pm taking pictures with kids or grownups to help raise money for Children’s Hospital.
The event page sums up the experience nicely, stating “If you’re tired of sugar-plum fairies, tinkling bells and jolly, red-cheeked mall Santas, then a visit to METALLICLAUS may be in order. This grumpy, cynical Santa provides the perfect antidote to holiday cheer, warming the black hearts of Detroit’s Scrooges with his anti-holiday rhetoric and humbug demeanor. His irreverent ukulele riffs, bad knock knock jokes, and ability to marry people officially (that’s right he’s an ordained minister!) will be greeted with his ability to help sick children for Children’s Hospital as Detroit Comics annual charity event.”
There will be treats, prizes and giveaways, plus pictures with Metalliclaus for $7.
