ScottWrightadTOPBob Gatt Talks about Future Schrock2015_SmilingFace_adAnimal Shelter, Gives Tour of Current Facility (video)
(Crystal A. Proxmire, Nov. 23, 2015)
With cages of kittens stacked up in the hallways, the echo of endlessly barking dogs, dingy floors, walls painted with fading cartoonish murals, and the endless “here let me move past you”s in the all too crowded space, it is clear that the Oakland County Pet Adoption Center is ready for a new home.
And if all goes well they will have one in 2017. The Oakland County Commission voted recently to use funding for the $15,450,000 project that will construct a brand new shelter on royal_servicesthe Oakland County Campus in Pontiac.
The current facility on Brown Road in Pontiac has been the target of criticism both by residents and by staff. Bob Gatt became Manager of the Oakland County Animal Control Division in 2013 and has steadily been tackling issues with both the facility and the program itself. Gatt is also the current Mayor of Novi, and formerly served as Chief of Field Operations for Oakland County’s Community Corrections Division.
“We just do the best with what we have here,” Gatt said He said the new facility will be “more modern, more like what Oakland County should be.” The new building will have separate intake and housing areas for dogs and cats, more space, better designed housing spaces, better medical facilities including surgery and recovery rooms and X ray capabilities, cat condos, and more opportunities for volunteers.
Check out the interview and tour below to learn more about what the challenges are, what improvements have been made, and Gatt’s hopes for the new facility…
