(Crystal A. Proxmire, Nov. 21, 2015)
Several explosions happened in Royal Oak near 11 Mile and Campbell. Originally this was reported to be a series of electrical transformers blowing. The City of Royal Oak later released a statement saying “DTE reports: Our System Operations Center in Detroit has informed us that the subject incident on Saturday night was not a transformer explosion. It was an arc flash.
Because arc flashes also cause a burst of electrical energy, this one caused a breaker at Lincoln open which resulted in a power outage for about 3,000-4000 customers. Once an operator was able to confirm what happened, steps were taken to restore service to those customers impacted.”
.As of 9:15pm there are over 3,000 residents without power in Royal Oak. There is also an outage in Huntington Woods and several other smaller outages through Oakland County.
Christian Grothe captured the explosions on video from an apartment in Downtown Royal Oak and shared on You Tube. This story was updated on Nov. 27.
