Craft Show Shows Clawson’s Creative Side
(C. Proxmire, Nov. 21, 2015)
It’s been a couple years since that fateful day when Heidi Pettey’s toe ring broke. The seemingly everyday kind of problem was the start of something good for the Madison Heights mom. “I decided to fix it myself,” she said.
In learning how to repair the ring, Pettey discovered a creative outlet that has blossomed into a fun and rewarding jewelry business. Her rings, bracelets and necklaces can be found in Royal Oak at Hair Apparent and in Berkley at Room with a Do. But perhaps the most fun is being able to do craft shows like the Christmas in Clawson Craft Show that took place last weekend at Clawson High School.
Not only does the annual show raise money for the Clawson PTA organizations, it brings thousands of people out to walk the halls lined with 189 creative vendors. “I love doing the craft shows,” Pettey said. “You get to meet so many people, and this is one of the biggest in the area.”
The show featured a variety of arts and crafts, homemade products and goodies that all could make great holiday presents.
April and James Forbes of The Menagerie in Pontiac see crafts shows as a sign of the changing seasons. “We do farmers markets through the summer, and when the farmers market season ends, we start doing these,” April said. The Menagire offers a culinary incubator kitchen, cooking classes and popup diners. Plus the Forbes’ travel through SE Michigan, introducing the public to their delicious baked goods.
Andrea Hodges who helps organize Christmas in Clawson said last year’s event attracted nearly 2,000 people. And the Nov. 14, 2015 show brought out over 3,000. The Clawson PTA organizations are active in school dances, senior all night party, senior breakfast, scholarship, providing resources for students and staff, and more.
